HOW OFTEN SHOULD I CUT MY HAIR?
Knowing when and how you should cut your hair has a lot to do with the length, chemical processes you have put your hair through and your individual hair goals. So here’s a quick guide to set up a good haircut schedule while ensuring that your hair remains healthy and beautiful.
Firstly, it’s important to remember that hair grow on an average of ½ inch every four weeks. This may be slower for some people too.
Long hair
If you have long hair and you want to keep it that way, then getting regular haircuts is very important. Long hair is very old and just as anything that ages, the older your hair gets, the more fragile it becomes too. This makes long hair more susceptible to damage, thinness and split ends. If you have highlighted or coloured your long hair, then it increases the chances of damage so regular haircuts are what can keep your hair strong and healthy.
If you have long hair, be sure to trim it at least once in 8-12 weeks. If you notice more split ends or breakage, then it could be cut more frequently. Also, talk to your hairstylist about your specifications and if you want your hair to grow longer, you may ask them to trim half an inch or lesser at the ends. If you want your hair to remain at the same length, it could be trimmed off more.
Medium length hair
For the medium length hair, the same rules as long hair applies. Be sure to have regular haircuts at 6-12 week intervals. To keep your hair at the same length, then a trim every 6-8 weeks would do but if you’re growing your hair out, then go for a trim every 8-12 weeks.
Short hair
If you have short hair and you want to keep that style, then your hair needs to be cut more frequently to keep it fresh. If you have short hair, then you may have noticed that it will appear to grow out quickly so trim it every four to eight weeks to make sure that the shape of your hair remains intact.
Chemically processed hair
If you perm, chemically straighten or highlight your hair on a regular basis, then your hair may need trimming more often. Since chemical processes on the hair can cause it to split, break or become dry, frequent hair cuts can help keep your hair fresh, prevent breakage and stop it from over-drying.
If you want to grow your hair out, you have to trim it. A lot of people make the mistake of not getting their hair cut if they are trying to grow it. Having said that, there is also a popular myth that regular hair cuts will make your hair grow faster. The truth, however, is that cutting your hair regularly will not make it grow faster. Rather, trimming it regularly will ensure that your hair doesn’t suffer from split ends or breakage that can slow down your hair growing process. If you want to minimize hair breakage and maximize hair growth, communicate with your hairstylist and have the ends of your hair slightly trimmed at regular intervals.
